Gotham Writers' Workshops New York

I've taken the plunge, and enrolled in one fiction writing subject at Gotham. There are many more available if I decide I've gained a lot from this one. Although there are a couple of university writing courses run locally I've always turned away from them, for two reasons. One is that they are horrendously expensive. Two is that I don't want to have to complete certain subjects which don't really interest me in order to gain a qualification (I already have far too many of those), and universities can over-emphasize the theoretical. I also wanted to do an online course where the lack of a physical self might loosen the stereotypes that come with being physically present. We all summarise one another to an extent: young, old; male, female; hip, frumpy; black, white etc. If appearance is irrelevant then the mind and its work becomes more visible. That's my theory anyway.

I'll post an assessment of the course as it progresses for anyone who might be interested, Barbara

Sounds great. I will be looking forward to hearing how it goes.

hey barbara

I have done four courses with Gotham and it is really good. The lectures every week the excercises you have to do and the comments and feedback you have to give and receive is really valuable.

Have a great course. I think I learnt a lot from them.

The university course I thought I was doing will have to be on hold, due to certain reasons.

I agree with all of your qualms about university above. I don't want to do irrelevant subjects either, and the QUT course seems to offer ones that I actually do want to do. The problem for me is travel and that it is a bad time in my life for that right now.

Anyway, enjoy your course, I really loved it and would do it again. I may if I don't end up doing anything else I might do another one. It is really convenient online!

Hear from you later.
I would love to suggest the Queensland Writing group gets together at some point soon, to meet and talk.

Hey Suzanne - I was thinking of you this week, haven't visited your blog for a while because of all the writing commitments I currently have with Gotham. I'm planning to write a blog post about it this weekend if possible. It's been fascinating, very instructive and I've learned heaps. But I also miss the vernacular which of course I'm only going to get by doing something in Australia. Now I'm going to try out the Writers Studio in March, and see if I like that as much - http://www.writerstudio.com.au/. I keep shying away from University courses, although I often check them out. Tres tres expensive! Now I'm going to go and read your blog - Barbara
